Donate now to ensure a future generation of disability advocates
Help us nurture the next generation of activists! The Barbara G. Toomer Fellowship is a newly established disability rights fellowship in honor of the work of Barbara Toomer, a long time hero, friend and partner of the DLC who passed away in 2018. With this fellowship, we honor Barbara’s fiery spirit, sense of fairness and lifetime of service to people with disabilities.
The Fellowship is no longer accepting applications. Check back for more information about next year’s application process. More information is available here.
ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP
The fellowship offers students, recent graduates and those in the early stages of their careers the chance to work alongside DLC staff to get practical experience in legal, legislative and advocacy efforts. Participants gain experience while contributing projects that make a positive difference for people with disabilities in Utah. Preference is given to individuals with disabilities.
Barbara G. Toomer, who used a wheelchair after contracting polio in 1956, was a trailblazer who worked to champion civil rights for people with disabilities here in Utah and across the nation. She help organize and lead many disability advocacy groups including Community Shares, the Utah Independent Living Center, ADAPT/Utah, and the Disabled Rights Action Committee (DRAC) among others.
She was a tireless advocate who wrote letters, made phone calls, gave testimony and met in person with many leaders in Washington D.C. and at the Utah legislature. When diplomacy was not effective, Barb and her army of volunteers turned to non-violent protest to champion the causes of equality, accessibility and civil rights for people with disabilities. Read more about her amazing life here.
Barb passed away in 2018, and will be greatly missed by her friends in the disability community. We honor her legacy with this award and the establishment of a fellowship to pass the torch to a new generation who will continue her important work.

Although we have secured funding for our first year, it is our mission to make the fellowship an ongoing project. Because much of our funding is restricted, we look to our friends in the community to help us pass the torch to a new generation!
