Given the findings of our recent visits to Provo Canyon School (PCS) campuses, we are pleased to see the revocation of the license at the Springville campus by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services.  While the closure of a facility is a drastic step, the State must take this action when a facility repeatedly shows it cannot meet the needs of residents or keep them safe.  In the future, we urge the Department not to wait until the harm rises to the level it has at PCS before taking whatever action is necessary to protect children. We remain highly concerned about the health and safety of the children at the boys’ campus in Provo, and implore the State to take continued action to ensure their wellbeing.  In addition, we call on our state leaders to make the reforms necessary to ensure facilities are held accountable before more needless tragedies occur.  We hope this is just the first step toward a sustained commitment from the Department in protecting Utahns with disabilities of all ages from abuse and neglect.
