The DLC understands there are times when a full guardianship is necessary. However, because it can take away a person’s fundamental rights and freedoms, we believe it should be a last resort. For many people, things like a shared bank account, power of attorney, advance directive, or a limited guardianship can be an effective alternative that largely allow them to maintain their independence and self-determination. For this reason, we appreciate Rep. Dailey-Provost adding discussion of alternatives to information on an emergency guardianship or conservatorship for those experiencing a mental health crisis in local mental health authority area plans.
